Hi, I’m Iris

Glutenvrij fruit ontbijt in Pakistan
Ontbijten in Pakistan met kilo’s fruit.

At this moment, I’m at home, waiting for the coronavirus to fade. Dreaming about more gluten free travel.

In August 2019 I quit my job and said goodbye to my apartment. Put our stuff in boxes and set off with a one-way ticket to India. Till March 2020 I travelled together with my husband Marnix through Asia. I love daydreaming in the train. I am often missing proper coffee, which is nowhere to be found waaaay to often. And I am constantly looking for food.

Which if it contains gluten, makes me curl up in a corner, staying very quiet in my place without moving. Except for puking my guts out for hours and hours on end. Waiting for my body to decide we’re OK again. So, ‘Is this gluten free’ is a very important question for me, two or maybe three times a day.

Indonesisch voedsel. Helemaal glutenvrij!

This might be gluten free

Travel with a gluten free diet is not an easy task at all. The fear of getting sick can be gigantic. Especially when you travel to less touristic countries or getting by on a budget. Trying local food is kind of a must, but also a proper challenge. When we travel, we don’t do tours, McDonalds or fancy schmancy hotels, so local food it is. Besides, these are not the places we like to explore.

Before Marnix and I left, I tried to find information about gluten free food during travel. I found a diet card an excellent start. But this was not enough by a long way. What food is safe to eat? Which ingredients are used in meals? What sauces?  Besides, what do you eat when traveling with a bus or train a whole day? About some popular destinations these was so much to find, like Vietnam, Thailand or Bali (or insert any other touristic destination).

Not so much when it comes to the countries I wanted to visit. A little more off-beat, like Pakistan, Azerbaijan or Kyrgyzstan. Extremely annoying, is what it is. I decided to write a blog about gluten free food in these countries myself. Besides, a gluten free blog is the very best way to eat tons of food with no regrets, all for the love of sharing information off course!

Maybe you’ll find a few helpful tips for during your travels.
